Bermuda's Premier Assembles Local Religious Leaders for Faith Tourism

Bermuda’s Premier Assembles Local Religious Leaders

HAMILTON, Bermuda - Premier Dr. Ewart F. Brown of Bermuda hosted a breakfast forum on Wednesday, September 17 with Bermuda’s religious leaders to discuss combating anti-social behaviour and the continuation of Faith-based Tourism.

About 70 religious leaders from a wide variety of local churches attended.

Premier Brown said: “Bermuda is blessed with a very strong faith community and I am grateful the leaders of that community are willing to come together and share their concerns and ideas. I told them today’s forum is not the end of the participation process, the Government wants to hear from the faith community often and we will create a structure that makes it easier to do so. ”

Parental responsibility legislation, life skills and morality teaching in schools and easing the financial burdens on working parents to allow them more time with their children were among a long list of issues discussed during an open dialogue on anti-social behaviour.

Wednesday’s event was held at the Evangelical Church of Bermuda in Paget.

About two-thirds of the two-hour session focused on anti-social behaviour, while the remaining time was spent on Faith-based Tourism

Emilygail Dill, as Acting Director of Sales and Marketing in the Bermuda Department of Tourism’s North America Office, has oversight for the Department’s Faith-based Tourism strategy. Today she briefed Bermuda’s faith leaders on the $18 billon global Faith-based Tourism industry. The industry generates more than 300 million travelers annually.

Mrs. Dill, an ordained minister, told the gathering the support of local faith leaders would be crucial to the future success of Faith-based Tourism in Bermuda.

Lifetree Adventures Announces New Christian Travel Option

Lifetree Adventures Announces New Christian Travel Option
Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Lifetree Adventures, a Christian travel operator based in Loveland, Colorado, recently launched tours to meet the growing demand for Christian travel, and is the first of its kind to offer Voluntourism specifically from a Christian approach.

Loveland, CO, August 27, 2008 (PRAvenueNW) -- Voluntourism, the growing trend of travelers seeking vacation options combining tourism with volunteer service, just got a spiritual shot in the arm. Lifetree Adventures, a Christian travel operator based in Loveland, Colorado, recently launched tours to meet the growing demand for Christian travel, and is the first of its kind to offer Voluntourism specifically from a Christian approach.

“Every Lifetree Adventure has two key components: adventure activities and Christian service projects—packaged into one amazing trip,” remarked Joel Fay, Lifetree President, “so you might find yourself exhilarated by thrilling zip-lines in the jungles of Costa Rica, and then take that passion and apply it to fixing dilapidated housing for young children and their families.”

Each of Lifetree’s adventures include three and four star hotel accommodations, touring national landmarks, free time, service days, many meals and meeting new friends—likeminded travelers, and indigenous people who need help. Christian travelers can help build a church, lead a Bible study, play games with disadvantaged children even help feed whole neighborhoods all while enjoying the vacation of a lifetime.

With tours operating in the fall of 2008, Christian travel participants can discover the excitement of exotic destinations while serving the needs of indigenous people through eight trips to four Latin American countries: Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala and Peru. For 2009, Lifetree has added Vanuatu, Alaska, Mazatlan, Kenya, Tanzania, Australia, Israel and Egypt as destinations. European High Speed Rail

They are the most sophisticated forms of rail transport in the world. Eurostar, French TGV, TGV Lyria, ICE, Thalys are redefining the European rail travel experience with their cutting edge style, comfort, speed and design.

What better way to travel between countries and cities than in the comfort zone of the Eurostar or French TGV as the ever-changing European landscape flits passed your window; it is an incredible experience in itself and a memorable part of anyone's journey.

High speed rail is the most obvious choice for travel in Europe. For journeys within 4 hours length, European trains have the market share of over 70%.

You can sit back in style with a glass of wine and enticing meal and enjoy the scenery as you head to some of Europe's most exciting destinations from the French to the Italian Riviera, Venice, Switzerland, and the UK; as well as other exciting destinations through central, eastern and Northern Europe.

These trains are streamlined, extremely comfortable, safe and fast; they can get you across all corners of Europe in style and at incredible speeds.
WiFi technology is fast becoming standard across Europe's High Speed Rail Network so it is definitely transport designed for 21st century travel; you can key into your lap top, answer emails and send messages, you are never out of touch.

Travelers are taking to the sophisticated, high speed trains of Europe with a vengeance. Rail Europe has chalked up $40 million in sales from this market in 2007 alone 22 per cent of its total annual worldwide turnover.

Rail has always been popular and seen as good value for money but in recent years we have seen phenomenal year on year growth, especially travelers who seek travel solutions that are safe, efficient, comfortable and increasingly carbon neutral.

High Speed Rail (HSR) has grown at a lightening pace in recent years and shows no signs of stopping. 2007 was a ground-breaking year with Eurostar launching HSR all the way from London to Paris, TGV launching 300km of new HSR tracks linking up longest land tunnel the Lotschberg Tunnel drastically reducing travel times between Italy and Switzerland.

In 2008 high speed rail between Madrid and Barcelona opened in March - with a lot more high speed rail developments expected later this year and into 2009.

The choice of rail passes available is also extensive and growing every year. Apart from the popular Eurail Global Pass which can encompass up to 18 different countries, there are the Britrail passes, France Rail Pass, Swiss Pass, Austria Czech Republic Pass, Greece-Italy Pass, Austria-Croatia/Slovenia Pass, European East Pass and Balkan Flexipass a choice of over 40 regional, national and multi-national passes in all. With our sleek trains and huge choice of passes, all of Europe is at traveler's fingertips.

WRTA Member: ARC Signs up 360-plus Verified Travel Counselors

ARC Signs Up 360-plus Verified Travel Counselors
http://www.traveltrade.com/news_article.htm?id=2521&p=index.htm
Mon Jul 21 2008, by TravelTrade Staff

The Airlines Reporting Corporation announced that is has signed up more than 360 Verified Travel Consultants (VTC) since the non-ticketing accreditation category was introduced in July 2007. "We are very pleased with these initial results and will continue to present this unique certification alternative to qualified travel professionals," said David Collins, president and CEO of ARC. "Feedback from current VTCs indicates that they appreciate ARC's extensive approval process and appreciate our effort to uphold the security and integrity that has long been associated with ARC," he added.

ARC began accepting applications for new VTC locations on July 18, 2007, as well as transitioning existing ARC-accredited agent locations whose business model had become more aligned with the then-new VTC tier of participation. To date, ARC has received well over 400 applications and since April, applications have come in weekly at a double-digit clip.

ARC said that VTC certification addresses the needs of a significant and growing segment - those agencies that can benefit significantly from ARC's unique systems and services but are not, or are no longer, ARC-accredited for air and rail ticketing. The VTC accreditation process excludes such requirements as a bond or letter of credit associated with ticketing entities and full accreditation, according to a spokesman.

Among other benefits, VTCs are able to generate revenue through service fees by assessing their clients' credit card a fee for travel services rendered; they receive weekly payment using ARC's Interactive Agent Reporting (IAR) system. In addition, a VTC has access to the 6,000-plus commissionable products and services offered through ARC MarketPlace, such as the ARC Travel MasterCard. Recently, the ARC VTC Mark -- a logo -- was introduced to support the brand for this ARC affiliation. The downloadable logos are effective for both print and Web marketing efforts. Complementing the ARC VTC Mark is the ARC check - a new feature that has been added to the ARC Web site that allows anyone to check the VTC status by simply entering the VTC number.

Globus' Faith in Religious Travel Grows

06/24/2008

Industry Leader Unveils New Vacations & Destinations for 2009, Including a Return to the Holy Land

Website: http://www.travelagentcentral.com/religious-travel/globus-announces-new-religious-travel-vacations-2009

LITTLETON, Colorado – June 24, 2008 – According to Globus’ Religious Travel Study (conducted by Menlo Consulting Group), 4.5 million people have traveled internationally on a religious or faith-based vacation. That number is expected to increase exponentially in the next five years: The same study revealed that by 2012, an additional 9.7 million will have traveled internationally on religious journeys. As one of the first and only large tour operators to embrace faith-based travel, creating a religious travel division in 2004, Globus continues to cater to this growing trend, unveiling both new vacations and destinations in 2009, including a highly anticipated return to Israel.

“Our study revealed that 54 percent of people interested in religious travel consider Israel to be the most desirable vacation destination, while 41 percent believe Italy is,” said Mike Schields, director of group sales and emerging markets for the Globus family of brands. “In 2009, we’re giving travelers new opportunities to experience their faiths first-hand in these coveted destinations with Journey through the Holy Land and Vatican, Assisi & Southern Italy – with extension to Medjugorje (Mostar), a famous town where the Virgin Mary has historically appeared.”

In addition, having witnessed three consecutive years of increased bookings on its religious vacations, Globus’ most popular faith-based packages include: Footsteps of Apostle Paul, Marian Shrines of Europe, Grand Catholic Italy and Lourdes & Shrines of France.

“Nearly 75 percent of people interested in religious vacations want to delve deeper into their faiths with others who share their passions and interests by traveling as part of an escorted tour group,” said Schields. “Most are also looking for vacations ranging from five to 14 days, filled with a balance of both religious and non-religious exploration, such as shopping and entertainment, as well as first-class service and amenities. With more than 80 years of experience in perfecting vacations, we’re giving this burgeoning group of travelers exactly what they want.”

Ancient cave found under one of Christianity's oldest churches in Jordan

Ancient cave found under one of Christianity's oldest churches in Jordan
Website article link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25061134

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - Archaeologists in Jordan said Monday they have discovered a cave underneath one of the world's oldest churches that may have once been an even more ancient site of Christian worship.
Archaeologist Abdel-Qader Hussein, head of the Rihab Center for Archaeological Studies, says the cave was unearthed in the northern Jordanian city of Rihab after three months of excavation and shows evidence of early Christian rituals.
The cave lies under St. Georgeous church, built in 230 A.D., making it one of the oldest churches in the world, along with one unearthed in the Jordanian southern port of Aqaba in 1998 and another in Israel discovered in 2005.
Hussein said there was evidence that the underground cave was used as a church by 70 disciples of Jesus in the first century after Christ's death, which would make it the oldest Christian site of worship in the world.
He described a circular worship area with stone seats separated from a living area that had a long tunnel leading to a source of water. He said the early Christians hid there from persecution.
A mosaic inscription on the floor of the later church of St. Georgeous above refers to «the 70 beloved by God and the divine» who founded the worship there.
Thomas Parker, a historian at the University of North Carolina-Raleigh, who led the discovery of the church in Aqaba, said that while he hadn't seen the Rihab site, any such claim should be taken with a degree of caution.
«An extraordinary claim like this requires extraordinary evidence,» he said. «We need to see the artifacts and dating evidence to suggest such an occupation in the 1st century A.D.
Parker asked how archeologists could be certain whether the «cave was actually a center of Christian worship.
The archeologist also noted that mosaics are difficult to date unless there is a precise date in the text of the mosaic inscriptions themselves and typical mosaic inscriptions with Christian themes are from the 5th to 6th century.
«It's quite possible that there was a cave with earlier occupation which was later converted to Christian use. But to make the jump that this was actually used by Christians fleeing Jerusalem in the 1st century A.D. seems like a stretch to me,» Parker said.
Archimandrite Nektarious, Bishop Deputy of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in Amman hailed the discovery, calling it an «important milestone for Christians all around the world and right here at home.
«It confirms that Christians in this region are not strangers,» he said. «They are real citizens who have always had roots in this region from those days until the present.

Immaculée will personally lead the nine-day mission to the Grotto of Lourdes, the Little Chapel of Apparitions, and the Cathedrals in Fatima, Burgos and Santiago de Compostela.

“Throughout my life experiences, my faith has always been the inspiration and source for my strength,” stated Immaculée. “I want to take my first journey to the Marian Apparition Sites with others that share my faith, my convictions, and my beliefs. I know this journey of faith will be a once in a lifetime experience for all of us on the trip.”

This Catholic pilgrimage will visit several of the most famous religious sites in the world including the Grotto of Lourdes, the Little Chapel of Apparitions, and Cathedrals in Fatima, Burgos and Santiago de Compostela, which will create a truly unique experience. These sites are where thousands visit these important Marian Shrines every year where countless miracles have been witnessed and documented. All of the 100 people on the mission will be participating in the candlelight procession in Lourdes, walking in the footsteps of St. Bernadette and St. James, and the Pilgrim Mass at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Immaculée, who has appeared in numerous media including 60 Minutes, CNN, EWTN, The New York Times, USA Today and many other domestic and international outlets has recently signed a contract with MPower Pictures to produce a major motion picture about her story. About Immaculée Ilibagiza
Immaculée Ilibagiza was born in Rwanda and studied Electronic and Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Rwanda. Her life transformed dramatically in 1994 during the Rwanda genocide when she and seven other women huddled silently together in a cramped bathroom of a local pastor’s house for 91 days. During this horrific ideal, Immaculée lost most of her family, but she survived to share the story and her miraculous transition into forgiveness and a profound relationship with God. Today Immaculée is regarded as one of the leading speakers on peace, faith, and forgiveness. She has shared her universal message with world dignitaries, school children, multinational corporations, churches, and at many conferences. Immaculée works hard to spread her message and to raise money for her Left to Tell Charitable Fund which directly benefits the children orphaned by the genocide.

Jordan Tourism - Religious Travel Update

Jordan Tourism Board of North America
Religious Travel Update

May 15, 2008, Volume 88.

Selling religious travel products makes good business sense for an increasing number of travel professionals, so if you are not currently selling faith-based travel to Jordan but are actively exploring and developing new products that meet the needs of the ever-changing marketplace, please read on – you might decide that this is the year for you to expand into this dynamic and growing sector, and Jordan could be your ticket to success. And whether you are new to selling Jordan religious itineraries or a long-time partner in faith-based travel to Jordan, we have many opportunities to co-op with you to market/advertise your Jordan religious product.

As the April Destinations of the World “Flight of Faith” cover story on religious travel reports, the global trend is now strong enough for many countries to start focusing on faith travel as part of their national strategy and for hotel companies to develop new properties in significant faith centers. Jordan certainly is working hard to accommodate the needs of today’s religious travelers and to attract visitors from North America. In 2007 alone, JTBNA religious ads – targeting Catholics; Mainline Protestants; Evangelical Protestants and Charismatic/Pentecostal Protestants – reached audiences with a cumulative circulation of 1.2 million. JTBNA also generated more than $750,000 in editorial media placements in religious media outlets, exposing a wide variety of Christians in North America – potential travelers – to stories on the people and places of Jordan.

Two potential ways to partner with us to put Jordan religious travel into your success column:

JTBNA 2008 Religious Market Co-Op Opportunities
JTBNA would like to work with you on mutually beneficial marketing/advertising projects to promote your Jordan religious travel products, such as:
Advertising
Direct mail
Special dedicated websites for your Jordan product
Brochure development
Got another idea? Let us hear from you.
If you would like to partner with us to develop a religious itinerary or to increase sales of your existing Jordan religious product(s) – please send a detailed proposal (including expected ROI) to Christine Moore (see contact information below).

JTBNA Preferred Provider Program for Jordan Religious Travel Experts
Our new Preferred Provider Program for Jordan Religious Travel Experts includes these benefits:
Designation as Religious Travel Expert in JTBNA marketing/communications vehicles.
Advertisement of your Jordan religious itinerary on our website.
Opportunity to partner with us during the World Religious Travel Expo and Educational Conference 2008* (Oct.29 - Nov. 1) at the Gaylord Palms Resort Hotel & Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. (Booth space will be limited and distributed on a first-come basis.)
Qualifications include:
Jordan Religious Travel Expert Training should be completed in 2008 (senior marketing and sales staff should complete our virtual seminars or schedule/attend in-person workshops).
At least one Jordan-only religious itinerary with a minimum of six nights. This itinerary must be featured in your primary catalogue/brochure targeting the religious market.

*As highlighted in our recent bulletin, JTBNA was invited in 2007 to be a charter member of WRTA. Jordan was chosen as the sole Holy Land destination to be represented on the Charter Member board simply because it is a unique, one-stop Holy Land destination that meets the needs of today’s religious travelers. Jordan combines the holy sites desired by traditional religious pilgrims with the multi-dimensional experiences (cultural, adventure, eco-, health and wellness, spa/retreat, etc.) that an increasing number of 21st century religious travelers demand. Other members of the elite, invitation-only charter membership group include The World’s Leading Cruise Lines (Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard Line, Costa Cruises and Yachts of Seabourn); Switzerland Tourism; The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism; Christian Travel Finder and Trafalgar Tours.
Jordan’s Charter membership brings with it top positioning at the first annual World Religious Travel Expo and Educational Conference 2008 (
http://www.religioustravelexpo.com/).
Here’s to an exciting year in the faith tourism industry, and to increased sales of your Jordan religious products (or to a successful launch of your new Jordan religious itinerary)!

SWITZERLAND
2009 Calvin Jubilee Celebration at the International Museum of the Reformation, Geneva
From Easter to October 2009, the International Museum of the Reformation, either alone or with other institutions, will organise a series of events to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin (1509–2009).
The main event of these celebrations will be a temporary exhibition entitled “A Day in the Life of John Calvin”, which will offer visitors of all ages an opportunity to follow a day in Calvin’s life in three dimensions. The exhibition aims to attract visitors from all over the world thanks to its modern design, featuring virtual representations of the Reformation-era world and Calvin’s main occupations. These 3D simulations of the Reformer in his familiar surroundings and activities will help foster a better understanding of his life and actions, in the manner of a documentary film.
This temporary exhibition will take place from 24 April to 31 October 2009 in the courtyard of the Museum of the Reformation and the meeting room of the Compagnie des Pasteurs, on the ground floor of Maison Mallet.
The eight pavilions of the exhibition (2 m by 2 m each) will follow John Calvin throughout a typical day, from the time he woke, usually around 4 am, until his bedtime, around 9 pm. Scenes will include a service at Saint-Pierre Cathedral, a tumultuous gathering of the Consistory, and a fateful meeting between the reformer and Michael Servetus. In each pavilion, the voices of Calvin, his friends, and adversaries, combined with the sounds of the city, will provide an understanding of both the life of the reformer and daily life in Geneva. Surrounded by historically accurate sets, a three-dimensional, animated figure of Calvin will employ simulation technologies developed by Prof. Nadia Thalmann’s MIRALab laboratory at the University of Geneva to speak directly to visitors.

The Lambeth Conference is one of the Instruments of Communion of the global Anglican Communion. It is convened every ten years at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury and is the only occasion when bishops can meet for worship, study and conversation. Archbishops, bishops, assistant and suffragan bishops within the Communion are invited. Also invited are bishops from other churches 'in communion' with the Anglican Communion, bishops from United Churches, along with a number of ecumenical guests.
MTS TRAVEL’s CEO and President , Jim Buddendorf, announced the award to MTS staff. “We are pleased to be appointed the official travel agency for Lambeth. Thanks to all of the MTS-New Jersey based staff who work so hard to service these very important clients.”
As well as the 800+ bishops who attend, their spouses are invited by the Archbishop of Canterbury's wife to a parallel, independent gathering: the Spouses Conference. Before the Lambeth Conference 2008 begins, all bishops and spouses will be invited to enjoy a weekend of hospitality in a diocese in England, Scotland or Wales.
MTS TRAVEL, Inc., has negotiated airfare contracts which provide economical prices and flexible terms, enabling the bishops and spouses to travel on worldwide major airlines at a reduced cost. Their travel consultants, expert in missionary and religious travel, also handled arrangements for the Lambeth Conference 1998. Across the Centuries – An Inspiring Passion Play!Oberammergau 2010
Ephrata, PA USA … A Play of Life and Death - promised in a moment of mortal threat - so began the history of the Oberammergau Passion Play in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers pledged to perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. At Pentecost 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage erected in the cemetery above fresh graves of the plague victims. In the year 2010, the Community of Oberammergau will for the 41st time be performing the play they have preserved throughout the centuries with singular continuity.
With a long history of Oberammergau tours, MTS TRAVEL has placed its ticket request with the Oberammergau committee. Distribution is scheduled for May 2008, when tickets will be sold to anxious play-goers. Jim Buddendorf, President and CEO of MTS Travel, notes, “Since 1960, we have provided tickets and travel services to this compelling event. Our faithful customers return time after time, bringing friends and tour groups with them to witness the Play yet again, while many new customers view the moving performance for the first time. Most take the opportunity to visit other sights in Bavaria and throughout Europe, thus creating a once-in-a-decade experience.”
The Passion Play Program
The play depicts the story of Christ's Passion, beginning with the entry into Jerusalem and ending with the resurrection and transfiguration. More than 2000 residents of Oberammergau take part in the six-hour enactment. Last performed in 2000, the play is comprised of spoken dramatic text, musical and choral accompaniment, and tableaux vivants. The tableaux vivants are scenes depicted for the audience by motionless actors accompanied by verbal description. Each performance starts at 2:30 pm and ends approximately 10:30 pm, with a three-hour dinner break/intermission from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The play is performed in German, but printed English translations are available. It is a moving and spectacular experience despite the language difference. The Premier Performance is scheduled for Saturday, May 15, 2010, with the final performance on Sunday, October 3.
Nestled in the picturesque Bavarian village of Oberammergau, the environs boast a long tradition of woodcarving. Stroll the streets of Oberammergau, visit many woodcarver shops, and take home handmade pieces ranging from religious subjects to toys. Don't miss the Oberammergau museum, housing hundreds of beautiful examples of this ancient art. Oberammergau is also famous for its vivid frescoes of traditional Bavarian themes, with fairy tales or religious scenes found on many homes and buildings. This painting technique further transforms Oberammergau into a trip to remember.
